 ANNOUNCEMENTS

Woodland Star Charter School hosts Open House: "A Walk Through the Grades", Wednesday, January 28, 2009 from 5:30-8:00 - Childcare provided.  Spanish speakers welcome!
Join us for a lively informational evening at Woodland Star Charter School.  This year we will host a unique "Walk Through the Grades" in which parents become students and experience the Waldorf inspired education first hand with the Woodland Star faculty.  The evening begins at 5:30 with light refreshments, continues with experiential learning as all parents become "students" for the evening and witness a variety of actual 1st -8th grade lessons and wraps up with the opportunity for questions and answers.  To reserve your space in the "Walk Through the Grades" today please call the office or speak to Miss Susan.

Community Education Night:  Thursday, January 29th 7-8:30 PM in the Main Hall.  Master Waldorf educator Ruthann Jahoda speaks about the importance of teaching children practical things: using their hands, building and maintaining relationships in the face of a culture valuing virtual life over reality.  FREE childcare w/advance reservations. FREE admission w/a completed family giving or e-scrip form.  Suggested donation $5-$10

*PARENT-TEACHER WINTER SOCIAL!* ~ Come join the FUN!!  Saturday, January 31st, 7-11 PM at Vintage House, 264 1st Street East.  Potluck: please bring your favorite dish to serve 15-20 people, and BYOB.  Suggested donation $10-20, contributions greatly appreciated to offset cost; surplus donations will be given to the 8th Grade field trip!  *Childcare offer currently being negotiated...stay tuned!*

Calling all singers! ~ Our next meeting is Monday January 26 at 9:00 AM in the music room.  Come sing with us!

cMarket online Auction is coming!  It begins January 21, 2009 at 12:01 a.m.  You can bid on items like a Trip for 5 days to Cancun Mexico, toys from GRIMM Toys, Gift Certificate for local business.   The on line auction lasts through February 25, 2009 at 10:00 p.m.

Estate Fundraiser - Save the Date for Saturday, March 28th and get your 1920s outfit ready.  This year's theme for the auction fund raiser will be the Great Gatsby.  Yes we are still doing an annual auction.  The difference is the size of the event.  It is much smaller this year and shorter.  Only 125 guests will be attending and the event will start at 5:00 and end around 8:30.  The event will be held at the outside patio at Estate Restaurant, which was generously donated by second grade parent John Toulze, the Executive Chef at Estate Restaurant.  We will be selling handmade items at the Silent Auction and Class Projects and some specialty items at the Live Auction.   If you have an item that you can donate for the silent that is personally made by you or by a friend, we would love to have it at our event.   The donation form is in the office or attached to this email.  Questions please contact Monica at 225-5557.

The Donation Station is Back! ~ If you have items you would like to donate to the auctions, please bring them on Thursday at pick up time between 12:15 and 1:15.  We will be out in front collecting them!   We will be using the items for either the new cMarket auction or the Estate Fundraiser.  All handmade items to be sold at the Estate Fundraiser.

‘Mortgage for a Year' Raffle Ticket Sales ~ Raffle Tickets are still available to sell.  You can pick up Raffle Tickets in the main office to sell OR you can purchase a ticket in the Main Office.

Update on eScrip Recycling ~ Over 100 print cartridges, toner cartridges and cell phones were sent to eScrip for recycling.  We get anywhere from $.05 print for cartridges to $35.00 for iPods.   Thank you so much for bringing them in and keep them coming.  There is a collection bin in the main office near the copy machine. You can drop off your recyclable cell phones, cartridges, iPods and laptops whenever it's convenient for you. It all adds up to funds for the school.  Any questions, contact Monica Conway 707.225.5557 or

CLASSROOM LIFE

Bi-Monthly the class parents get together to share what our classes are doing and receive information about updates that come the Fund raising Group, Charter Council or Festival Committee.  So on a bi-monthly basis updates will be posted on a class or two and what is happening in that class.  Below are the first updates.

           - 1st grade is studying virtues.  The children will receive a new virtue each week and the parents will participate by helping the students to practice the virtue at home.

- 4th grade is getting ready for their overnight trip to Fort Ross.  They are learning Russian Dances and preparing their costumes for the trip that will take place in the end of January.

- 7th grade is making plans for the sandbox they will be making for the lower grades.  They are designing the drainage, the size of the box and putting together all the materials they will need to make the sandbox.

CLASSIFIEDS

Homework Clubs ~Attention 6th,7th  & 8th grade parents and students. I am offering various Homework Clubs for the upper grade students. The main emphasis is on math, but if your student needs help and a quite place to work on any homework assignment space is available. We will meet in the Mail Hall or in a classroom at 3:10 PM or 2:10 on Thursdays. The cost is $10 per student. The intention is for certain grades to meet on certain days and there is some flexibility here if needed. Here is my tentative schedule:

             Mondays for 8th graders.
             Fridays for 7th graders
Tuesdays and Thursdays for 6th graders

Calligraphy Class ~ On Thursdays at 1:10 PM, I would like to offer a Calligraphy Class for 6th-8th graders. In my experience with teaching the upper grades, this is a class they really love and it gives many benefits for their development. It can obviously improve their handwriting and it can also work on their fine motor development, tactile and spatial awareness and increase their sense of appreciation for beauty in this world.
